Beach Volleyball Tryouts: FAQ
All prospective student-athletes must have an account in RegisterMyAthlete (https://www.registermyathlete.com)in order to complete all registration requirements - including a current AIA Physical Examination and Questionnaire.
The coaching staff does not clear athletes. Please complete the Athletic Clearance requirements as far in advance as possible. Keep in mind that the closer it is to tryouts, the longer it will take to verify all documents and signatures. If you upload everything on the first day of practice, it might not be approved until the next day.
Not yet. Student-athletes who competed during the Fall season (and/or participated in tryouts for the indoor volleyball team) already have most of their pre-participation requirements on file* in their RegisterMyAthlete (https://www.registermyathlete.com)account.
In order to get cleared for the Spring, please add "Beach Volleyball" to your RegisterMyAthlete (https://www.registermyathlete.com)account, sign all release waivers, and pay the Athletic Participation Fee in the Bookstore prior to the first official practice.
* A new AIA Physical Examination is not required unless the student-athlete has experienced a serious injury or illness since the Fall season that requires written clearance from a physician.
Like the Ironwood Ridge Indoor Volleyball Program, the Beach Volleyball Program expects student-athletes to attend all training sessions, practices, competitions, team meetings, and program activities.
To be successful, beach volleyball requires a strong commitment to your partner, the team, and the overall program. Athletes are expected to be dependable, accountable, and supportive of their partner throughout the season.
While there is some flexibility during the spring season, all schedule conflicts must be communicated to and approved by the coaching staff at least two weeks in advance.
No. Partners and pairings are determined by the coaching staff once the Athlete Evaluations and Team Selections are complete.
The coaching staff will be evaluating the following skills:
• ball control and consistency
• serving and serve receive
• defensive range and court awareness
• communication and competitiveness
• adaptability and decision-making
• reliability as a partner and teammate
Effort, attitude, and coachability are also important factors for the Beach Volleyball Team.
All prospective athletes need to attend all tryout sessions until otherwise notified by the coaching staff. Failure to attend all sessions for any reason could adversely effect any potential placement on a team.
If an athlete will miss tryouts for any reason, please contact the Coaching Staff as soon as possible. Please note that family vacations will not be deemed acceptable reasons for missing tryouts.
If not cleared, players are encouraged to sit and watch the tryouts to understand the drills and concepts that will be taught. Once they are cleared to participate, an alternative tryout may be arranged if the final Team Selections have not been posted.
No.
The Pre-Season Practices are offered to start the evaluation process and to give prospective athletes an opportunity to train before the official start date. While this evaluation period will help an athlete prepare for tryouts, it will never hurt an athlete’s chances to make a team during the official Athlete Evaluations and Team Selections.
By tradition, Freshmen do not normally tryout for the Ironwood Ridge Volleyball Varsity Team. Exceptional Freshman may be promoted during Team Selections and/or promoted to the Varsity Team during the season, but only after they have demonstrated the athletic ability and skill level, as well as the work ethic and maturity level to play at the Varsity level.
Sophomores may be promoted during the Team Selections and/or promoted to the Varsity Team during the season, but only after they have demonstrated the athletic ability and skill level, as well as their academic record and performance during their freshman season.
While all training sessions are closed to the public, parents are allowed to observe.
However, please consider refraining from attending the tryout sessions. The athletes (and coaches) are stressed enough and we don’t want to add to the stress level by allowing outside influences to watch.
Yes. The Bookstore will issue refunds (or apply to another sport) for all students that do not make the beach volleyball team.
